How does meter assignment type affect where data appears?

Every meter has an "assignment type" that determines its scope within the building hierarchy. This directly controls where the meter's data is visible:

Building (assignment_type = "building"): The meter measures consumption for the entire building. This is a main meter. Its data appears in the main Energy dashboard charts and is used for building-level reports. Most utility company meters are building-level.

Local (assignment_type = "local"): The meter measures consumption for a specific unit/area (building local) within the building. Example: a dedicated electricity sub-meter for a retail unit. Meters are never linked to a tenant directly — the meter stays on the local, and whichever tenant occupies that local during a billing period is billed for its consumption. When one tenant moves out and another moves in, nothing on the meter needs to change.

Common Area (assignment_type = "common_area"): The meter measures shared spaces like lobbies, parking garages, hallways. Common area costs are typically distributed among tenants based on the building's allocation method (proportional to area, equal split, or custom percentages).

Key insight: For data to show in the main Energy dashboard overview, you typically need at least one building-level meter per energy type. If you only have local-level meters, the building overview will be empty — the data exists but is scoped to the unit views and tenant billing.

Where to set this: Buildings → select building → Meters tab → click on a meter → Assignment Type field.
