How do I add a meter?
A meter is where consumption is recorded — electricity, heating, water, gas, waste. Add one per utility and per intake point, then feed it readings from invoices or from a live data source.
Add the meter on the building
- Go to Buildings → open the building → Meters tab → Add Meter (on an empty building: Add First Meter).
- Fill in:
- Meter Number / ID — the number printed on the meter or on the utility's invoice, exactly as printed. Uploaded invoices are matched to the meter on this number.
- Meter Type — the energy carrier (electricity, heating, gas, water, …). Gas meters also choose how they are read: kWh, m³ or Nm³.
- Reading Unit — set once; it cannot be changed afterwards.
- Location Description — optional, e.g. "basement, next to the main switchboard".
- This is a main building meter — tick it for the utility's intake meter that measures the whole building. Leave sub-meters unticked.
- Save, then open the meter and set its Assignment: Whole Building, a Specific Local/Unit (for billing that tenant) or Common Area.
Get readings into the meter
- Invoices: upload the utility invoice under Invoices. Consumption on an invoice whose meter number matches lands on the meter.
- Live data: readings from files, API connections and webhooks come in through Analytics → Data Import. A meter that an import created appears under Analytics → Meters only; click Add to meters on it to register it on the building as well — that is what enables alarms and billing for it — then set its assignment on the building side as above. To create a live meter by hand, use Analytics → Meters → Create Meter (name, type, unit, reading mode: cumulative or per period); with a building selected it is registered on the building at the same time.
Rules of thumb
- One main meter per energy carrier per building; everything downstream is a sub-meter.
- Only meters with status "Active" count in dashboards, alarms and billing.
- Registering many meters at once: see "How do I register many meters at once from a file?"
