Why is the spot price in Analytics different from what my energy provider charges?
The Analytics dashboard shows the pure ENTSO-E day-ahead spot price — the raw wholesale cost of electricity. Your energy provider's bill includes several additional charges stacked on top of this base price, which is why the numbers differ.
Your provider's bill typically includes these components on top of the spot price
- Energy component — this IS the spot price. It should match what Analytics shows for your building's price zone
- Grid/network fees — charges from the local distribution and transmission grid operator. Varies by region and provider
- Power/capacity charge — based on your peak demand (kW), not consumption (kWh). Common in commercial tariffs
- Fixed monthly fee — a flat charge from the grid operator or supplier
- Energy taxes and levies — government charges that vary by country (e.g., electricity tax, renewable energy levies, efficiency fund contributions)
- VAT/sales tax — applied on top of everything, rate varies by country
Example breakdown
- Spot price (Analytics shows): 0.08 EUR/kWh
- Grid fee: +0.04 EUR/kWh
- Energy tax: +0.02 EUR/kWh
- Levies: +0.01 EUR/kWh
- Subtotal: 0.15 EUR/kWh
- VAT (e.g., 21%): +0.03 EUR/kWh
- Total: 0.18 EUR/kWh
In this example, the all-in cost is more than double the pure spot price. The exact ratio depends on your country, grid operator, and contract — in some markets grid fees and taxes make up over 60% of the final bill.
What to do about it
- For analytics and consumption pattern analysis, the raw spot price is what you want — it shows market dynamics and helps you identify cost-saving opportunities
- For tenant billing, add a surcharge in your billing template (Tenant Billing → Templates) to approximate the additional costs
- For detailed breakdowns, use a Price Model with individual unit lines for energy, grid, capacity, and fixed charges
Where to check: Analytics → Energy tab for spot prices. Tenant Billing → Templates for surcharge setup. Compare with your provider's invoice to calibrate the surcharge percentage.
