What is totalization and how does it affect consumption calculations?
Totalization controls whether a child meter's consumption is included when calculating the parent meter's sub-meter breakdown and unmeasured consumption.
How it works
- When a child meter has is_totalized = true (green toggle), its consumption counts toward the "Submeters Total" shown on the parent meter
- When is_totalized = false (gray toggle), the meter is excluded from the sum
- Unmeasured consumption = Parent meter consumption minus Sum of totalized children
Example
Your building's main electricity meter reads 1000 kWh for the month. You have three sub-meters:
- Tenant A meter: 400 kWh (totalized)
- Tenant B meter: 300 kWh (totalized)
- Server room meter: 150 kWh (not totalized — excluded because it overlaps with Tenant A's meter)
Submeters Total = 400 + 300 = 700 kWh
Unmeasured = 1000 - 700 = 300 kWh (shown in orange)
The 300 kWh represents consumption not tracked by any totalized sub-meter — common areas, losses, or meters not yet connected.
When to disable totalization
- The sub-meter overlaps with another meter's measurement (double-counting)
- The meter is informational only and should not affect the balance
- The meter is temporarily misconfigured or producing unreliable data
How to toggle: Click the totalization toggle button on any child meter in the Canvas or Table view. The change saves immediately and recalculates the parent's breakdown.
Where to check: Analytics → Formula Meters → select a parent meter to see its sub-meter breakdown with totalized vs untotalized children.
