How do alarm notifications work and how do I set up email alerts?

When an alarm triggers, the system sends notifications through the channels you configured on the alarm rule. Here is how each channel works and how to set them up.

Available notification channels

  1. Dashboard — An in-app notification that appears in your notification center. Always active for all alarms. Shows alarm name, severity badge, measured vs expected values, and a link to the alarm. Dashboard notifications are marked as read when you click on them.

  2. Email — Sends an email to specified addresses. The email includes the alarm name, severity, meter name, building, measured value, expected value, deviation, and a direct link to the alarm in your dashboard. Emails are sent via the platform's email service.

  3. SMS — Text message alerts for critical alarms. Useful for on-call maintenance staff who need immediate notification.

  4. Push — Browser or mobile push notifications. Requires the user to have granted notification permissions.

  5. Webhook — Sends a JSON payload to an external URL. Useful for integrating with third-party systems like Slack, Microsoft Teams, PagerDuty, or your own monitoring tools.

How to configure notification channels

When creating or editing an alarm rule, you select which channels to use in the notification section. For email, you also specify the recipient email addresses — these can be any email, not just platform users.

Notification priority

Notification priority is derived from alarm severity:

  • Critical alarms → high priority (processed first)
  • Warning alarms → medium priority
  • Info alarms → low priority

Delivery and retry

The system processes pending notifications in batches of 100, ordered by priority. If a notification fails to send (e.g., email server timeout), it retries up to 3 times. Failed notifications show an error in the system logs.

Preventing alert fatigue

The cooldown period on the alarm rule prevents repeated notifications for the same condition. Set longer cooldowns (120–240 minutes) for non-critical alarms to reduce noise, and shorter cooldowns (15–30 minutes) for critical equipment.

Where to configure: Analytics → Alarms → select or create a rule → Notification Channels section.
